The Environment

First Credit Union is committed to managing the environmental impact of our activities. To date, we're making good progress in reducing our environmental footprint.

Sustainability Guidelines

First Credit Union has sustainability guidelines in place that outlines our commitment to:

  • Create environmental awareness
  • Aim to reduce the use of resources such as paper, electricity, fuel and organic waste
  • Balancing carbon usage
  • Using initiative and common sense
  • Considering the environment in all purchasing decisions

What we're doing right now:

  • Reducing paper consumption - we print in duplex, make notepads out of scrap paper and recycle used paper. We also encourage staff not to print emails or documents wherever possible.
  • Reducing waste - our staff are partial to takeaway coffees and takeaway sushi, so we provided them with reusable thermos mugs and sushi boxes. We also have a food scraps bucket in our lunchroom which staff with ponies, chickens and pigs take home to feed them!
  • Reducing energy use - turning monitors off, turning things off at the wall wherever possible, as well as unused lights, sensor lights, minimising air conditioning use by opening windows etc.
  • Measuring and monitoring usage - we monitor power, paper and fuel usage, communicate goals and targets to staff and give feedback on results.

What you can do:

  • Choose not to receive paper statements in the post, read them online instead.
  • Sort your rubbish and recycle appropriately.
  • Avoid printing emails and documents unless you need to and print on both sides of the paper whenever possible.
  • Use reusable containers for lunches or leftover instead of plastic wrap, plastic bags or paper.
  • Buy things with minimal packaging or if possible, with no packaging.
  • Purchase reusable's instead of disposables, for example nappies, pens, razors and batteries.
  • Donate unwanted items to thrift stores and charities instead of throwing them out!
